The right to choose is meaningless if you can’t get an abortion when and where you need one. Roughly 80% of United States counties have no licensed abortion provider. All over the country, women have tried, and failed, to get abortions in their home states.
They scrape together bus fare or gas money to take advantage of New York City's abortion policy (NYC performs abortions to 24 weeks) and funding assistance (procedures cost from $1,000 to $2,500 plus the cost of transportation). Before Haven, these women were sleeping at Port Authority, on park benches and in their cars during their 2 day outpatient procedure.
Haven hosts provide a safe place to sleep, transportation to and from the clinic, and a meal. Volunteers sign up for days to be "on call" and generally host once or less per month.
Haven is an all-volunteer organization with relationships to several NYC clinics that refer patients to us. Since launching in June 2001, Haven has provided a safe night’s lodging for more than 400 women. To host, you need to live in one of the five boroughs, a place a guest can sleep and the willingness to create the space in your life for this direct-action work.
